Girl Scouting Never Stops

There is a phrase I hear over and over in the realm of Girl Scouting, "Once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout." I get to see it time and time again in the lives of our volunteers and donors, but recently I had the great joy of living it with my own "make the world a better place" adventure in England!

The story of how I found myself in this spot is longer than I'm sure any of you want to read (though you can see some highlights on my personal blog if you're REALLY interested). The short story is that I applied to be part of a group of "Garden Angels" from around the world to launch a new project with Imogen Heap and Clear Village.

We cleared land, designed concepts, built structures, and planted ... all within one week. We also celebrated birthdays and each other, enjoyed tea, devoured meals, learned from amazing experts, and laughed ... a lot. I learned Slovakian words from my roommate, met a super-smart Gold Award Girl Scout Engineer pursuing her Ph.D. in England, and even recorded elements (like screaming) which were used on Immi's "Neglected Spaces" song!

But aside from having my own personal adventure and meeting amazing people, the biggest reason I took the plunge was that I could make a difference ... truly make the world a better place (as part of our Girl Scout mission). And it took courage, confidence and character to do it! Every day was a first of some kind or another. I fought personal battles and won. I pressed through physical barriers and succeeded. And, of course, I talked about it - just like I do when I'm being a Girl Scout in an office and working with media.

As you can see, this has a way of following me. While I truly prefer being BEHIND the camera, I will be in front for a good cause. And since I'm a Girl Scout and a communications professional, I find myself in front more often than I'd like! I can't stop being a Girl Scout, and I can't stop doing what I can to make the world a better place - even if it makes me uncomfortable (like being on camera)! (Of course, as I start moving forward with more healthy living things, I probably won't mind those cameras so much. But I'll have to post an update later after I start doing a little better. I'm a work in progress.)

Some Serious Reporting

This serious group of girls had a seriously great opportunity ... and even though it has taken me a while to get up a post about it, it's still one of my favorite moments.

Tulsa Shock graciously worked with us on a BIG event where girls had the opportunity to experience different roles through the night. I brought in a good friend of mine who is a real reporter and journalist to lead and inspire the girls. Not only did he do that, but he was able to get them an interview with the coach after the game!

This is what makes my heart so soft ... people who volunteer simply by sharing their skills and abilities, making a new opportunity open up for girls. I don't know if they realized how lucky they were, but they took full advantage of the moment! I was so impressed. They asked not only great questions, but GUTSY questions! One, in fact, made the other reporters in the room gasp and scribble in their notebooks, too. But even better than that, they made the coach's day and she encouraged them as well.

My Daughter's Feet

I have to laugh sometimes ... my daughter has her own sense of style. Ballet and socks? Not to mention neon leopard purposely "matched" with a solid?

Her little anklet made me think of summer camp. Replace the pointe shoes with tennis shoes and she could be at camp. Then again, replace the pointe shoes with flats and she could be at school. Put them in boots and she's on horseback. The interests of girls can be wide and sweeping, but they are always bringing their personality into their world as it expands. And that makes the world beautiful and interesting.

Naturally, that's another part of Girl Scouting I love. It gives girls opportunities to experience and explore. And ultimately, by building courage, confidence and character, it brings out the unique leader in all ... even leaders in mis-matched leopard socks!

Growing Up A Girl (Scout)

Remembering moments with my daughter makes me think about how fast time is flying through our fingers. This photo seems like yesterday ... but it was taken over a year ago.

Today as I picked her up from the airport after her annual summer visitation in Ohio, she wasn't in cowboy boots. She was in Converse with black leggings and a tuft of a tulle skirt sporting a band tee and feathers in her hair (all the rage now).

It was likely her last trip as an unaccompanied minor. It means that she's be jet setting on her own now. It also means that I'm not ready to watch her grow up much more!

But it will happen. Ready or not, I'm a mother of a young girl growing into a young woman. Thankfully, I'll have a string of opportunities this year to be part of the adventure (some near, some from afar) as she takes those steps - not only as a girl, but as a Girl Scout.

In a world full of questions and environments that are so different than my own when I grew up, I am thankful for the steady path of Girl Scouting: courage, confidence, character, and making the world a better place. It's a legacy and a future wrapped into the adventures she and her Girl Scout friends are creating today - and she doesn't even realize it!

And, admittedly, I feel weak as I face the future. But the sense of community I'm growing in as a mother of a Girl Scout is something that strengthens me. We can grow together here. And that thought makes me smile.

HEALTHY LIVING: Water

I know I need to do more than just think about the Girl Scout Healthy Living initiative ... but I also know I need to take small steps that I feel fairly confident I can sustain. Where can I start? I think I can start with water. (I also secretly telling myself to always eat breakfast, but I'm not sure I can stick with that yet!)

ONE GOOD THING I DO: I often order water instead of soft drinks or tea at restaurants.

ONE GOOD THING I CAN START: Drink a glass of water before I drink my coffee. (Thanks, Roberta, for that one!)

MAKE IT FUN (or at least a little more fun): Flavored water.

Personal note: I love mint! I love mint in my water. I don't love the designer price tags for my favorite bottled mint waters, though. But I found something I like just as much: Goodman's Flavorings! Mint + Orange is my favorite right now (just a drop of each swirled into an average size water bottle) ... I discovered it while traveling when I wasn't too keen on drinking hotel tap water. I thought mint extract might do the trick, but these were half as much (a little over $2), so it was worth a try. VOILA! Truly much better than my other home experiments with extracts. I've used two cases of water in the past month during travels, and I've barely used 1/4 of the flavoring. Economical!

I'm A (Healthy) Girl Scout!

I've been thinking ALL DAY about the Girl Scout Healthy Living Initiative ... Why? I'm not-so-healthy. Does it limit what I do in my life, with my daughter, or affect the example I set for her? Probably. OK, OK, OK ... yes.

What do I do with these thoughts? This is NOT my cup of tea. I'm not a diet hound. I'm not one who enjoys exercising unless it involves creative expression - like dance - but who wants to dance overweight? I'm way too self conscious to pursue that right now. I'm comfortable as a workaholic. I lose sleep constantly. I'm driven by schedules and deadlines. I'm exhausted as a way of life. The time to plan healthy menus and cook/prepare at home seems nonexistent. And I can't even remember to take my vitamins! Is there hope for someone like me?

So now I'm thinking ... maybe a personal challenge will be good. Maybe being public about it will be even better! Maybe (just MAYBE) there are some other Girl Scout adults out there who are like me: out of shape, stressed out, time crunched, and don't see how it can change.

Leaving Legacies

I was looking through photos while waiting for an upload ... and I found this. It's an image from a young girl who won first and second place with her photography entries at the Tulsa State Fair last year. I like it because it looks like something I would do. And quite literally, it is "me" being reproduced in someone else. This girl has periodically watched me take photos since she was 5 years old and attributes what she does to me. This picture is a legacy. It's something I've passed on to another generation. And it represents what Girl Scout volunteers are doing continually ... their skills, passions and interests are flowing into a new generation who will take them and make their own path. I love leaving a legacy!

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

From inside a juvenile detention facility, the scene is not what one might expect. In fact, I find myself wanting to find something eloquent to say about the visit I had today with Girl Scouts. But I think the message is loud and clear. It is far more than words on the wall. It's real. People care ... they care about kids in tough situations ... and they're dedicating their lives to helping them turn things around.

Character Is A Choice

What I think is unique about character is that it doesn't have to be an inborn trait. It can be taught, learned, embraced and expanded. There is no underlying fundamental talent that is needed for character to take root in a person's life. You don't have to have a "green thumb" to make it bloom and grow. Ultimately, it is a choice.

(For anyone really interested in my long train of thought ... feel free to keep reading. These are just thoughts that have traveled through my mind. No professional or personal platforms are intended. I was simply energized by the thoughts a book had sparked and wanted to capture it while it was fresh.)

Late last night, I started reading Delivering Happiness by the CEO of Zappos, Tony Hsieh. I wasn't expecting to do anything more than just enjoy another perspective. But at page 159, I had to stop and capture a few thoughts as it relates to "corporate culture" of Girl Scouts.

The first solid thought came from a discussion of core values and if they are truly meaningful. Can people name them or the company mission? Can people live them? I truly believe the Girl Scout mission is a catalyst because it's what I envision for my daughter ...

"Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place."

How about in the workplace? I had always had a blind embrace of it as an employee with more of an arm's length view - it was what we were doing for the girls. But today I started thinking. How does our mission affect the professional work environment? While all three "C's" seem like prerequisites with a view to making the world (and our work environment) a better place, character seemed to be the number one element that I see affecting our own "corporate culture."

We may be actively making the world a better place ...
We may be courageous and confident in what we are doing ...
But are we embracing character? Are we transparent? Do we own our own mistakes? Do we talk behind the backs of others? Do we disagree and sabotage? Do we bottle up frustrations? Do we circumvent due process? Do we really respect one another? Better yet, do we truly respect authority? Or are we satisfied with tolerating and venting when we come to roadblocks? Do we collaborate to solve issues? Do we put ourselves aside for the progress of our collective abilities to serve girls and volunteers? Do we have an open forum both personally and professionally? And do we still honor others with what is said behind closed doors?

Then I read an excerpt on page 158:

"Integrity was a value that had been suggested by some employees, but I made a conscious choice to leave it out. I felt that integrity would come from us actually committing to and living up to our core values in everything we did, not just referring to them when it was convenient."

I've had that thought in the Girl Scout world before when it comes to leadership and self-esteem (it comes organically through opportunities to exercise the mission) ... but I had not thought about it in terms of our mission specifically. My mind immediately went to the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Character is much like integrity ... it is a value that comes from us actually committing to and living up to the Promise and Law, our "core values" if you will.

The Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try:

To serve God and my country,

To help people at all times,

And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be

honest and fair,

friendly and helpful,

considerate and caring,

courageous and strong, and

responsible for what I say and do,

and to

respect myself and others,

respect authority,

use resources wisely,

make the world a better place, and

be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Let's be honest (and fair) ... we are certainly human. There are days where exhaustion can take over and it's hard to be friendly or helpful. Situations arise and depending on the reactions, one more negative outburst can drain the last reserves. Considerate and caring responses can become feigned, a burden, or simply non-existent.

So what do we do? How do we respect ourselves and our limits while respecting others and authority? Maybe it is summed up in our last three lines ...

1) Use resources wisely. Whether personal resources, company resources, material resources ... it all applies. Do I have enough internal bandwidth to address a challenging situation within the ideals of our Girl Scout Law? If not, maybe I need to evaluate my resources ... gain understanding, get a fresh perspective, identify solutions and what we have or need to address it, and when better prepared, have that open discussion to make something positive happen.

2) Make the world a better place. Am I contributing to my world? My world can be a variety of elements - work culture, family, community, etc. If I am about to tear something down, is it with the aim of making it a better? Identifying the purpose within each action is huge in my mind. And in this case it's the guideline to know if it's a candidate to be part of the mission or not.

3) Lastly ... be a sister to every Girl Scout. What does this really mean? I'm not sure that I'm the best one to even attempt a description. I never had a sister! But I always wished I had one and frequently imagined what life would be like with a sister. I wanted someone to share life with on a daily and continuing basis. So what do sisters do in my daydream? Work together, play together, help each other, be honest even when it hurts, apologize when relationships go awry, and ultimately know that we're in it for the long haul. A sister is forever.

Diversity and Legacies

It does my heart good when I hear about inspiration and encouragement that simply relies on the human experience. Neither age nor race should play a discriminating role in the impact a person's life can have on the future of a girl. And I'm proud to say that I have found Girl Scouting to truly be a place where that is demonstrated.

Take Dawn and Dorothy, for instance. Dawn (left) grew up in McAlester with Dorothy (right) as her troop leader. At a recent event to honor Dorothy, the thanks and the stories that poured from Dawn's heart brought both laughter and tears. Dawn is NOT the outdoor type and as a girl had a hard time spending time away from home. Dorothy always encouraged her and always let her go home when it got to be too much ... time and time and time again.

Because of Dorothy's open encouragement, Dawn continued to take steps as she was ready, and eventually she made it through a night, and a weekend, and she has even successfully camped. But it wasn't just about staying overnight. It was about developing those core leadership skills - courage, confidence and character. The wisdom of patient leadership is what Dawn needed. And as a result, she had more than just a successful experience as a Girl Scout. She is now a professional Girl Scout staff member along with Dorothy! And maybe even more importantly, she is guiding her own daughter on a similar path in Girl Scouting to discover her strengths and master them one step at a time.

Dawn and Dorothy are both women who embody the Girl Scout Mission of making the world a better place ... one step at a time, one girl at a time. These women make me proud to be a Girl Scout, too!

Girl Scouts ... Not Just For Girls

I remember walking into a room of incarcerated women who were waiting to meet their daughters for a very non-traditional Girl Scout troop meeting. Hidden behind the crowd of children were two - a brother and sister - there for the first time. The room quickly filled with chatter and hugs as children were reconnecting with their mothers. But one moment stood out above the others. To hear a mother's emotion filled sobs echoed by her children as they embrace for the first time in years shook me to the core. A Girl Scout, a "tagalong" sibling, and an incarcerated mother ... all joined together and working toward hope. That's powerful.

Reaching out into a girl's life affects far more than just the young girl. I'm thinking about her connections in the world ... and they are significant. Imagine being able to inject courage, confidence and character into her relationships. How would that affect her mother? Her brother? Her schoolmates? Her teachers? Her mentors?

We often talk about the change Girl Scouting makes in the life of a girl, but we don't always talk about the change it can make in the lives of those connected to her. But the impact is exponential.

I remember interviewing a Girl Scout volunteer who is a school employee. As she told stories that went from troop to camp to schoolyard, we laughed and cried together ... and I was humbled by the amazing circle of impact I heard just through one voice.

I remember being introduced to a woman who talked about how Girl Scouting was as much for her as it was for her daughter. The same courage, confidence and character that was building in her troop was also building in her, and she was able to free herself from abuse and finally found she indeed did have a wonderful future and life ahead of her.

I remember hearing about an adventure involving a Girl Scout with disabilities and her troop learning to rappel ... again laughing and crying over the trials and triumphs. And I was so thankful for the man (one of our outdoor trainers) who so gently encouraged and empowered the young girl. Yet talk to him or his wife and their dedicated scouting family (even their daughters are leaders now of troops) and you'll find story after empowering story not just about the girls, but about their families and their futures.

I remember reading a thank you card from a volunteer who never realized she'd need to use her first aid training to save her own son. And to the schoolmates of two young girls I know who have literally saved lives? It's almost beyond words. The impact is immeasurable.
Even I, who am on the lowest scale when I observe these moments from the outside, feel that impact and it changes me. Imagine how making a difference can change the rest of the world!

Oasis

Life can be a desert. But in the desert, there is an oasis ... somewhere. My solo adventure in New York City (for the NextGen:Charity conference) is becoming a snapshot of the reality of life. I'm tempted to draw all the parallel lines, but somehow I don't think all those will matter to the world at large as much as they do to me. So I'll just share the Girl Scout related moment.

The first night I arrived, my unexpectedly shabby hotel seemed to hold more disappointment than excitement ... UNTIL ... I went to the rooftop terrace. Suddenly the view expanded before me with a bit of breathlessness and I decided to let myself take some time and soak it in. The sights ... the smells ... the sounds ... the laughter.

The laughter? That's not normally a sound I hear in New York City. And then I saw it ... a playground on the roof of a neighboring building. Can you see it there? It's not visually obvious, but there it is ... an oasis of laughter and joy.

And that's where my heart starts talking. This oasis is not part of the natural environment. It was placed there on purpose as a safe place to nurture the needs of children. Caring adults had to deliberately carve out this space and give it a purpose. In the midst of a world that is too busy, too adult, and too cold ... there is a place just for youth. It's very much like Girl Scouts.

Regardless of the environment, Girl Scouts holds an opportunity for an oasis. It's a safe playground where girls can enjoy and explore and develop all those important elements of life: relationships, dreams, goals, accomplishments and overcoming obstacles. It's a place where a young girls can connect with each other and with their world in their own way. It's a place where they can not only build a future and make a difference, but do it with laughter and joy.

Creating a playground in the sky certainly takes some effort, but it's worth it. Hearing the laughter ringing up to the rooftops seemed to call out to me ... not just to find the oasis for myself, but to create it for others as well.

It Only Takes A Spark ...

This morning, six girls were out making the world a better place. I was there, I took photos, and I had my proud moments again. But you know what made me stop and think today? This young girl.

As we took photos, she had an idea for a picture. Then another idea ... and another. I offered her one of my cameras, and she told me that she liked being in front of the camera but not really behind it (quite the opposite of me). My daughter and I showed her a couple of things about the camera and how it worked. Before we knew it, the photographer had been unleashed!

There were no lack of ideas, and I think we attempted nearly every one of them. There was laughter, delighted squeals when something turned out extra special, and the animated gushing only pre-teen girls can do that makes everything feel like an adventure. So, an adventure we had! All it took was a little spark of inspiration and someone to take note and fan the flame.

(Get ready to sing ... I'm taking you back to my junior high church choir and our favorite song.)

It Only Takes A Spark ... To Get A Fire Going ... The words are more than a song in my head. At least they are when I stop to think about it! As a mom, I think I'm guilty of letting sparks die far too often. I admit it. I'm busy. We have a demanding schedule. And there are opportunities that slide by on a daily basis. I think it's that way for so many of us moms out there. It's probably that way in any realm for ANY of us out there.

I'll admit something else. This adventure was not something I did by choice. It's humbling, but I truly only made the effort because my department made a mistake in posting the information for this particular opportunity. While I probably could have waved a boss wand and sent the situation elsewhere, I decided to personally get involved and try to make it something special. I had to wrestle myself out of the house to go do it!

Roll that all together, and there are several life lessons to toss around. But you know what? I'm just glad I somehow had the patience to let the moments unfold. It really was only a spark. And out of the 441 photos we brought back with us ... less than 100 were mine! Yep, I'd say that was a fire.

Strong and Confident Hope

These girls ... beautiful. I am profoundly blessed when I get a few moments to have their energy infuse the air I breathe. I see such strength and confidence. I see bravery. I see unity. I hear infectious laughter and notice quietly hopeful moments light their eyes. Little do they know, their spirit and even their spirited antics are secretly fueling my heart.

When children are faced with overcoming great odds as they grow into young adults, my heart is particularly tuned. I'm a mother who daily feels the joy and pain of watching a child bend and turn with life's sometimes rocky road. And while every life has grit and grind of one kind or another, these girls have a common bond.

They are daughters of incarcerated women.

I do not know what that feels like to a young girl. I do not know the depth of the challenge they face. And when I stop to imagine, my heart cries out for them. But I do know this ... they are empowered. And my heart swells because they are empowered by Girl Scouting.

This is Girl Scouts Beyond Bars. Courage. Confidence. Character. The world is definitely a better place.

Dove Dialogues & Silver Linings

In a moment of inspiration this morning, I ran to get chocolate for my staff. Why? There's more change in the air, which for us means revising hundreds of documents, web pages and electronic resources. The change itself isn't big ... but the work and stress of "re-revising" what has been revised more than once in the past 2 years is pretty big.

This falls on the shoulders of one person more than others, and I not only brought chocolate when I stopped by to share the news, but a big, thermal coffee mug. I think she will need it! We shared a laugh when she emailed the message from one of her Dove chocolates. It was so appropriate: “Don’t take it personal.”

Then I get: “Be the silver lining in another’s cloud.”
Awwww! Still appropriate, maybe the chocolates were a silver lining. I pat myself on the back.

After that: “YOU are that superwoman. So enjoy!”
Hey! Mine are sounding like more work!

… So now I’m kind of afraid to open the next chocolate.
… But I can’t stand not knowing.
… So I open the next one (even though I don’t really want a chocolate): “Don’t take it personal.”

I just have to laugh.

But you know what? Like so many things, there's a message. Doing good = hard work. Some people have the perception that working for a nonprofit is a warm, fuzzy career move complete with relief from the pressure of corporate equivalents. However, I know several people who have tasted both sides and get a laugh at thinking that nonprofit jobs are "cake" jobs. We know better!

We get the pleasure of doing good as part of our job. But you know what? Being the silver lining is no easy task! Actually, like so many of the wonderful opportunities that come our way in the world, it looks like work ... and it is.

So to sum up the advice of the day, don't take it personal. Enjoy! Be the silver lining, superwoman!

Working or Whining ... For Love or Money

Last night, my daughter and I were laughing over some photos in a classic diner where she was guilty of whining where the above sign was present (I believe it may have been the offending onion ring in her basket of fries). Of course, she slowly got over it and had a ketchup-face to prove it.

"Why would I do that?" she asked. "That place is AWESOME!"

Her perspective 5 years later (half of her life) is much different than in the heat of the moment. What she doesn't realize is that those moments have not ended.

Isn't that true for all of us? Being part of an organization that works with and for girls, I can say that those emotional investments are just as strong whether the girl is five or 50 ... they just look a little different. As an adult, we smile as we deal with the childhood drama that seems ever-present with girls. We think of how much they will learn and grow. We shake our heads and laugh (or wring our hands and cry) knowing "it's just a phase." But is it?

I say all this to confess. I think I'm guilty of whining. See? I can't even say it without "I think" because it's embarrassing as an adult to admit to whining. But the fact of the matter is that I'm stressed, overwhelmed, frazzled and burned-out (and those around me know it). Inside myself, I'm whining because I don't want to be stressed. I can't meet all the demands. There's more in front of me than I ordered ... and I JUST CAN'T TAKE IT SOMETIMES. Instead of withdrawing with crossed arms and pouts on the counter of a diner, I'm burying myself in work while others are out enjoying life around me. Just swap out that corn dog with a computer and I'm in her shoes!

But a $5 charge for whining isn't going to make it better. In fact, I think it would make it worse. What's it going to take for me to just "pick up that hot dog" and enjoy it bite by bite? Regardless of productivity strategies, policies, ultimatums, rewards or consequences, there's something much more powerful.

I read a quote this morning that drew me back into purpose (an ever present pursuit).

Let's be honest. Life isn't easy ... And it isn't getting any easier. Work is the same way. So why am I working? My heart leaps a little when I read that quote. I just have to say it again. Work is love made visible. YES! Work is my way of contributing to the world through whatever gifts are in my hands. More specifically, being part of something that honors the spirit of girls (and even women) to discover who they are and give them wings to become who they want to be.

Like my ten year old daughter, I look at the picture of myself whining and say, "Why would I do that? That place is AWESOME!" I pull my big-girl perspective of "work is love made visible" close to me as I head for the office.

Passing The Torch

Running to and fro throughout the BOK Center during Girl Scout Night with the Tulsa Shock (our new WNBA team), aside from being tiring, had immense rewards. An excited text from a mom brought me up to the video booth where two young girls weren't "just" (a big deal in and of itself) shadowing the pros and looking over their shoulders, they were really making things happen!

I watched and my heart could have burst with both pride and thankfulness. The mentors for the night were ABSOLUTELY fabulous, truly giving our girls a hands on experience. And our Girl Scouts? Interested and engaged. Intelligent and confident. They were rockin' it! When I visited, one was working with replays and the other was switching camera feeds.

But here's what is so cool ... it wasn't just because the professionals who took them under their wings were so awesome (though they were), but their adventure was directly related to the girls' curiosity. This was NOT the usual tour. These girls had questions ... smart questions ... ones that opened the door to bigger answers. So instead of just watching and learning, these girls got to see and do. In order to answer their detailed questions, they were even brought up on to the catwalk so they could see how the lighting worked. The more they asked, the more opportunities they had. And the adults enjoyed them so much, they got permission for the girls to do far more than was originally approved ... and they were invited back after halftime for the rest of the game.

And while I'm recovering from new discoveries like ANKLES CAN DEFINITELY BE SORE, I am also relishing the thought of girls experiencing something new and adults willing to pass the torch. Little Miss H (pictured here) who applied for this job specifically because it's something she wants to do when she grows up ... well ... she just had a revoluntionary night, one that may impact her future in great ways. Once again, I am reminded that what we do truly makes a difference.

All Work and No Play?

Which way to go? Sometimes that little question packs the biggest punch of them all. And it's also one of the things I love about the Girl Scout experience. The wide array of opportunities that are at a girl's fingertips give her a taste of what those directions hold. She has the freedom to explore her world.

Camp is just one of those ways to explore. From a specialized focus (outdoor activities like sailing to "S.T.E.M." directions like physics) to a wide array of options (my daughter's choice this summer is a camp where the campers decide what they want to do together), girls are exploring directions that will help them build their answers to the big question: Which way to go? It's not such a scary question if you're a Girl Scout!

Life Moments & The Invisible Me

Oh, how I wish I were invisible! It would come in SO handy when capturing the little moments of life that swirl by. But sometimes I am fortunate enough to go unnoticed (or maybe ignored). As a pair of young Girl Scouts made their way past where I was standing, a special moment drifted my way. Without looking up, their beautiful little faces gravitated toward each other as they talked about friendship. I didn't expect to eavesdrop, just take a great photo with my camera. But what I heard surprised me.

I didn't even know how much of an impact it made on me until I realized I couldn't shake it from my mind. They were talking about choosing each other as friends. One girl said she didn't have any other friends ... and that's when my heart was both happy and sad at the same time. They talked in-depth and their conversation disappeared with them. But what remained in my mind caused me to wonder what would cause a fresh young life to avoid friendship. The simple answer? I'd place my bet on pain. And I'm making an educated guess on that one!

My heart kept hurting for the young girl. But on the flip side of whatever has separated her from others, a new opportunity for friendship was blossoming. They were choosing friendship together.

Can I be honest? Some of the Girl Scout sayings that are new to my ears have not held the importance they should. Things involving fun and friendship have at times been placed on the shelf in my own mind as less important than courage, confidence, character and changing the world. But when a moment like this stops me in my tracks, I have a glimpse of just how powerful friendship can be. And indeed, when I look at key moments that brought courage, confidence, and character ... they often involved friends!

Thank goodness for Girl Scouts.

The Beauty of Volunteerism

I'm chomping at the bit to share photos of our Sangam event (pending photo releases) ... it's a "wide game" where Girl Scout Juniors have the opportunity to experience cultural connections by learning about our world center in India and the national heritage.

It gives a great picture of what one might call "non traditional" Girl Scout volunteers. These volunteers come together for one afternoon ... easy enough! And yet what a significant event for the girls.

I love seeing the range of faces and roles of these volunteers. The beauty is that anyone can share their wonderful world with another regardless of age or race or background.

We have professionals sharing their international experiences.
We have ethnic groups sharing their culture.
We have young artists sharing their skills.
Girls get a taste of Girl Scout connections worldwide ... literally with the cuisine.
And of course, we have the ever ready "I'll help wherever needed" volunteer who gains a wealth of experience with each new opportunity.

Yes, this is a beautiful picture to me.

Discovery ... Smell the Roses, Study the Bugs

Of the three dozen people spending the weekend together at camp, one young girl noticed this grasshopper. The moments shared following this discovery became a highlight of the weekend for her and for me.

Discovery is such an important element to growth and life and accomplishment. I think it's no wonder that it's the first element of our Girl Scout Leadership Experience: Discover, Connect, Take Action!

Sometimes, revolutionary discovery isn't the in big things ... it's found in the tiny details others overlook. But it's those minute discoveries that can lead to a profound revelation. As a seed carries the potential for a forest within ... so discovery has the seed for life experiences and maybe even revolutionary change.

I think about Einstein as he imagines himself traveling on a light beam. How many people stop and take the time to do that? Our phrase "stop and smell the roses" might be more significant than we realize. When is the last time you encouraged someone (including yourself) to imagine riding on a beam of light? To stop and smell the roses? To study a bug? I think I'll take time to discover something today.

Lunch Break Play Break

I'm working from home again today so I can focus for maximum productivity. The benefit right now is that I have a built in play break (which I hear is healthy) any time I venture downstairs. I fixed lunch for myself ... and the 8 pups ... and the 2 big dogs ... then enjoyed this scene in my living room before diving back in to preparations for our Girl Scout Adult Recognitions. AWWWWWWW!

Someone To Say, "WOW!"

I was part of the Junior Badge Blast weekend at one of our camps last weekend. I have a CRAZY schedule, so it was definitely a sacrifice to fit it in. But I had a very important personal reason to be there ... it's my opportunity to say, "Wow!"

The lives of young girls are full of amazing opportunities and experiences. When women look back on their younger years, often their most impactful moments are tied to adults - those who encouraged them, or those who tore them down. And the successes or hurdles to follow somehow find their roots in whether or not someone believed in her as a girl. That is why I am part of Girl Scouts today.

Seeing girls enjoy learning something new and expressing themselves is always a joy. But it is extra special when one of the girls who is a little more quiet or shy, a little less connected to the others, shares her project with me and tentatively whispers, "This is what I want to do when I grow up." Wow. What a precious moment. I have the joy of whispering back, "Go for it!"

This is where I get to do what our volunteers are doing every day ... being there to empower a girl, being there to believe in her, being someone in her world who looks at her and says, "WOW!"

Children of Incarceration Matter

It's a busy day at the Oklahoma State Capitol. Not only are Girl Scout
Cookie Top Sellers being recognized, but a quiet force of Girl Scouts
are gathering to show their support for SB 1612 to be heard in the House
Human Services Committee today.

I think of it as a "Bill of Rights" for the children affected by the
incarceration of their parents. This is an issue which Girl Scouts is
addressing on a daily basis with Girl Scouts Beyond Bars. Our growing
efforts started with Project M.E.N.D. (Mothers Encouraging & Nurturing
Daughters) and are seeing WONDERFUL returns for both the girls as well
as the mothers ... and now families.

We're proud to be on a path that brings courage, confidence and
character to any situation. And now those affected by it are making
their voices heard to bring change to their world. I'M SO PROUD!

As I started re-reading "The Path" by Laurie Beth Jones this morning, I remembered I was going to redo a Wordle for our GSEOK Leadership Message. Sometimes the page of black and white words takes a little investment to get the inspiration behind the words. But that's where my visual side comes in (and my love for things like Wordle, which makes the visual easy). I put in our message and the most prominent references show up visually. Girls. It's all about the girls.

My personal favorite key words come from the mission: Courage. Confidence. Character. That's what I want for my daughter. That's my desire for all girls to experience in life. With those three elements, their path is already built on some pretty solid ground. What a gift to give a young life! And it's something our volunteers, staff, and supporters do every day.

Girls and Airplanes (and Pearls)

When it comes to flying, sometimes it's exciting. Other times it's necessary and even sad. Such is the case today for my little one's holiday visit to her dad. We tried swapping holidays and BOY is it hard!

But while at the airport, we learned something really cool. The first wing walkers were women. How brave! My daughter wasn't interested in trying it, though the steward offered her a pair of goggles (JOKINGLY, of course).

But it was still a little hard to laugh. It's the first Christmas for both kids to be at their dad's place. But my daughter and I traded our pearls to keep each other near. It was our first year of a new tradition ... Holiday pearls as long as she is a Girl Scout (in the spirit of Juliette Low who sold a rare strand of pearls to find the Girl Scout Movement). At our Juliette Low Leadership Society Pearl Sale, I found some "twisty" pearls ... A colorful dyed strand for her and ivory for me. So if you see me in colors this week, you'll know why!

We're about to start a new holiday tradition ... Pearls. Today I had a great idea at the pearl sale, one that will honor the work of Juliette Low, founder of Girl Scouts. She sold a rare strand of pearls to fund the organization in 1914. Hopefully we'll hold a pearl sale every year because I want this endeavor to also help support Girl Scouts! So as long as my daughter is a Girl Scout, she'll get pearls in some form for the holidays.

I can hardly wait ... And I almost want to spill the beans! But my daughter is almost as connected as I am. So my nifty mother/daughter concept won't be pictured right now. But I'll post everything after it's revealed on Friday, December 18!

Tie-Dyed Angels

That's what Girl Scouts are ... tie-dyed angels. And today I had a visitation! Once again, my little self-sufficient world was rocked with kindness, this one from a tie-dyed angel. This particular one could easily be the queen of all who have sported the signature swirls and twirls. And judging from her widespread fame in this area, if her kindness spreads like her dye, this world is in for a colorful treat!

Her helping hand was more than I could have imagined, and it feels small to just say that she went "above and beyond." But knowing that I'm leaving things in her hands gives me a comfort I don't even know how to adequately express. These Girl Scouts are AMAZING. From young to old, those who inspire young girls are AMAZING. And today, this tie-dyed angel made me feel AMAZING.

If I am ever ambitious enough to make my own costume for any reason, I may find myself rolling up fairy wings and squirting them with dye!

We're All Different ... Or Are We?

I am inspired by this toolbox. It looks very much like an organization. We are all working side by side to accomplish the same mission. While our sense of purpose gives us a particularly strong common bond, we each have different skills and talents. And we are plugging those abilities in to the same engine that drives the largest leadership organization for girls.

Lately I've been contemplating differences. They give us flavor in our relationships ... and headaches, too. As a professional Girl Scout, I work side by side with some of the most interesting people I have ever met. They give flavor in the workplace ... and headaches, too!

Is that bad to say? Or just honest? I think if we all admit it, our working relationships can be strained and it can sometimes make completing a mission difficult.

Oftentimes, all I need is a word picture to get a bigger picture. When differences seem to get in the way, my goal is to back up and take a look at the bigger picture. We're in the same toolbox. Sure, we are each fit for different roles. But when it comes down to it, we're not as different as we think! Each one of us is here to make a difference, and together we can do it.

Girl Scout Friends

The girls are now Junior Girl Scouts ... and the relationships that have been built over the last 3 years in this troop are deepening as they grow older. Shy gigglers have turned into screaming huggers. And even though most of these girls haven't seen each other over the summer, they come together like they haven't missed a beat.

I'm amazed by the sense of purpose that is beginning to develop. Girl Scouts isn't just something fun to do with others, they are asking about who they are going to help this year. Their brainstorming was fun to watch as they all had more ideas than we could possibly enact to make the world a better place.

Their cheers, their laughter, their smiles, their friendships ... little do they know that these moments are building relationships that may stand the test of time.

This spring, a volunteer shared how meaningful she realized her friendships through Girl Scouting had become. Her husband passed away, and when it came time to celebrate the life he lived with a memorial service, she turned and saw face after Girl Scout face in the crowd. Tears came to her eyes as she told the story. And they came to mine, too.

What an enduring treasure, these Girl Scout friends!

Working Luxuries

My daughter is ill ... so I feel a little guilty for it being the reason I can enjoy working luxuries. I am spoiled rotten after several days of stovetop Italian espresso in Riomaggiore this past spring. Coffee in the workplace is no longer up to my "coffee snob" standards, so I have been suffering. But today I indulge! I have my favorite coffee, my favorite attire (PJs!), and most of all my favorite little girl in the next room.

Meanwhile, I get to be a work-a-holic for an organization I love (you would laugh to see my desk at this moment - one desktop, one laptop, one BlackBerry all in use simultaneously - regretfully lacking the cameras I left in my office to work with today) in the comfort of my own home ... for today.

Sailing Through Life

I have to say ... this looks REALLY good right about now! Personally, the beauty and peacefulness of this moment are a much bigger draw than my desk and deadlines! But what I also love is seeing those girls two by two. Do they know they are learning things like teamwork? Do they know that they are fueling each other's confidence? Do they know that they now have a skill that makes one late-blooming, middle-aged Girl Scout a little envious?

Aside from one afternoon trying to learn how to windsurf in northern Minnesota, I have not spent any time maneuvering a sail. And with the pace at which my life travels, I don't know when the opportunity to learn will come. These are the types of things that I find myself wishing I had experienced in my youth. What a wealth of experiences are available to modern girls! Maybe I'll start catching up when I retire. If you see a windsurfing grandmother 30 years from now ... it just may be me!

Your Not-So-(stereo)Typical Hiker

I'm tall ... but not currently slender and probably not who you you would expect to meet on a mountain trail or in a canyon. I'm loaded down with cameras and am sporting brand new "gear" (recently discovered the value of trekking poles, multi-terrain shoes, rugged water bottles, and backpacks), and I move SLOWLY. So I imagine that seeing an overly equipped, rotund hiker sliding down a slope while rolling backwards is not a common sight. FORTUNATELY, I don't think anyone saw me! Yes, me. At that moment, I didn't want to admit I am a Girl Scout!

All drama aside (I won't detail the excitement here, but if you are REALLY interested you can visit my personal blog), I have to admit that my first thought as I was lying at the bottom of Red Rock Canyon after performing my magnificent slidey-flip was, "THIS WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT!" I found a series of "hidey-holes" in the rocks, a perfect place with shade to eat some lunch and write in my journal. I bet I could have camped there!

Brave thought for me ... but made me wish I had those kinds of opportunities when I was young. I wish I could turn back time and be part of a Girl Scout troop that had adventures. I wish I had opportunities to travel internationally like girls do now with destinations and the like. But I'll catch up as I can. And maybe one day I'll actually camp in a cave and get more pictures like this ...

Our girls got a special opportunity to be part of the Tulsa Area United Way press conference revealing their new campaign goal. It was the first actual press conference for all of them, and they were very excited to see the TV cameras! They did a GREAT job (and kind of stole the show). But what we really needed photos of was the parents in the back of the room. They were clicking and coaching smiles like crazy! Our girls really are STARS!

My First Girl Scout Hire ... Now a Mom!

Sasha (middle) is a dear soul. She came to us after going through the corporate wringer and was my first hire at Girl Scouts. During realignment, we embraced more people, and I would like to think Kami (right) and I armwrestled over Sasha, but I would have WON (wink)! She stepped into grant writing, and what a fabulous job she has done!

From a young woman with a powerful story, to a woman with life-earned wisdom, we have been honored to be part of her life. What a joy to celebrate her marriage and now motherhood! As I shared with her today, she will be wonderful in her new role (as she is in everything), doing it with all her heart and a spirit of excellence.

I just said a tired goodbye to my little Girl Scout who is officially on her first horse adventure of the summer. Of course, I couldn't leave without another photo. Sometimes moments like this cause me to randomly reflect ... Seeing how beautiful she is and is becoming ... Seeing how her features somehow match her tie dyed shirt (a classic Girl Scout project) ... And how glad I am to have people in her life to affect her in positive ways. As a currently single (and way too busy) mom, I couldn't do it on my own! My heart is thankful for all of you who make a difference by empowering girls.

Girl Scout Goes Skype

Just a cute thing on the Social Media side of Girl Scouting …

My daughter (Miss M) and her new video pal (Miss G) enjoyed their first Girl Scout oriented “Skype date” last night. The girls met through their moms who became acquainted during a Twitter chat about Social Media tools last week. Miss G is in NY and her mom teaches Social Media classes. It was adorable! She would say, “Turn to page 99 (in the Junior Girl Scout Handbook). Want to play that game?” They showed each other their vests and sashes, their badges and patches, their workbooks, and even their dogs. See the array?

Who knows ... they just might work together on a Bronze Award project involving social media (a mini-class for girls their age, how to connect online and stay safe, something like that) ... we'll just have to see what transpires in the coming weeks!

Paying It Forward ...

Imagine, if you will, a party … a birthday party … a party for a 10 year old girl complete with decorations and cake … but a party with no gift wrapped boxes. Why? Because Hayley is a remarkable girl. Better than that, Hayley is a Girl Scout. Oh, certainly, there were gifts! But the gifts were not what you would normally find at a young girls’ party. They were donations for a cause.

You see, Hayley had a life changing moment when she realized there were girls who were not able to attend Girl Scout camp. The thought so impacted her that she was compelled to do something about it. She told her mother what she wanted to do, they contacted the Council to find out how they could make this happen … and instead of just a party invitation, this amazing young girl added a note about what she would rather do. She gave guests the opportunity to send a donation to Girl Scouts instead of bringing a gift so she could help another girl go to Girl Scout camp. She wanted to “pay it forward” so to speak.

Our CEO had the opportunity to meet Hayley to present her with a “Good Deed” patch and asked her why she did this. She looked at her for a moment, as if I should already know the answer, and said, “I’m a Girl Scout!”

Fast forward just a few weeks to a United Way panel gathered at our office. Just as we do each year, we have at least one girl speak to them about her experience in Girl Scouting. Ikera and her mother bravely shared from the podium. As Ikera talked earning her first patch, her eyes lit up. A panelist asked if she had attended Girl Scout camp. She had not been able to yet. But she dearly wanted to go.

In that moment, our CEO thought about Hayley’s gift and Ikera’s desire … and that afternoon we were able to make both of their dreams come true. Ikera was registered for resident camp before she left that day and Hayley’s gift had blossomed.

BUT THE STORY DOES NOT END HERE!

Imagine now a stack of Girl Scout cookies … actually, cases and cases of Girl Scout cookies. It’s common for Girl Scouts to sell cookies, but it is not common for a Girl Scout to sell them so another girl can receive the benefit. This Girl Scout cannot go to camp this summer, but she had been before and wanted to make sure another girl could have that opportunity. Who is this remarkable girl? It is none other than Ikera. And now Ikera is paying it forward.

Another benevolent birthday party was held by Hayley … another Cookie Sale is around the corner … another idea will be birthed in the heart of another remarkable Girl Scout … for this is what we are all about. Courage. Confidence. Character. Making the world a better place. That sounds like paying it forward to me!

Miss Tulsa, Damaris Pierce, and Uniquely Me!

What a treat ... not only were the girls going to enjoy a high-energy BYOU2 dance video, but they had a special guest! Damaris Pierce, a past Girl Scout and the current Miss Tulsa, encouraged girls to be themselves and pursue their dreams as part of the "Uniquely Me!" program. The girls listened, then they asked questions ... and more questions ... and more questions. We all learned that Miss Pierce has not owned a hippopotamus! But the biggest reaction by far was when the girls asked how she kept her crown on and she showed them. I don't know why, but to see elastic forming an "x" on the top of the crown was absolutely fantastic and they all gasped in amazement.

BYOU2 ... time to DANCE!

And dance they did! The gym full of girls was boppin' and rockin' to the BYOU2 video with Sabrina Bryan from the Cheetah Girls. As part of a special partnership with GSUSA, this video is being brought to girls all over the USA this spring. It was a great thing to see the girls enjoying themselves so much (and they said they could have dance for HOURS) and doing something healthy. I had to laugh. The adult Girl Scout staff members started off in the back of the gym ... but I think they only lasted through the warmup!

Laurel and Katie and Tattoos ...

Laurel Richie, Chief Marketing Officer for Girl Scouts of the USA takes a peek at a new kind of branding ... literally! Katie's tattoo has branded her as a Girl Scout for life! Katie is one of the many wonderful young women I have had the pleasure to meet in Girl Scouting. I wouldn't be surprised if she becomes another first for women in the NASA space program (whatever that first might be a few years down the road).

One of my favorite media moments was listening to her interview last year with a Tulsa World reporter (regarding her Gold Award) who was rather stunned to hear she had a grade point average of 4.2 and wasn't quite sure how to respond to that. I didn't know that was possible, either, but it was for this Girl Scout!

Girl Scouts are wonderful, diverse, creative and self-sufficient young women. Katie is no exception. As one of the recipients of a Juliette Low Leadership Society scholarships, she attended a recent luncheon where she had the opportunity to meet Laurel Richie.

Actually, all the girls who attended the Juliette Low Leadership Society luncheon (both scholarship recipients and older Girl Scouts) enjoyed a private session with Laurel afterwards. I was impressed by the thoughtfulness of our girls as they both asked and answered questions. They weren't afraid to share how the felt if things (like Journeys) didn't live up to their expectations and why. And they also gave feedback regarding cookies that was more in depth than just "new boxes please!" New photos, sure ... but they liked that the girls pictured were being active. And they requested that the colors of the cookie boxes stay the same (for easier ordering by customers who want "them there orange ones") ... very helpful to know! And Laurel said that was something she could definitely take back to the team.

My favorite part, personally, was just knowing that these girls had a change to both glean from an amazing role model as well as make their voice heard in an arena where they are significantly invested ... Girl Scouts. Thank you, Laurel, for making the girls a priority and hearing what they had to say!

We have some CUTE little PR Stars who will be on the air making Girl Scout Cookie ice cream sandwiches. But the recipe was chosen by these two and they made the finished product that got displayed on TV. What would I do without my helpers?

Sienna Won My Heart

While schedules fly and so much seems like a challenge to do, I just have to take a moment to share a memory. In November, we had our first OFFICIAL session for PR Stars. Girls who have sold over 500 boxes of cookies were invited to join. Naturally, every girl is precious in one way or another, but little Sienna won my heart.

There was a lot of hustle and bustle with the Tulsa World reporter giving a session on interview etiquette, blogging sessions, and a super-fast photo shoot. This little girl was a bit shy and really wanted to keep her sweatshirt on. I took just a moment to talk with her and we struck a deal (but it's a secret, so I can't tell!). Those little eyes looked up into mine with trust ... and my heart melted. What a brave little girl! She made me so proud. Proud of her, proud of Girl Scouts, proud of every little moment that defines a brave step in a girl's life.

Have I said lately, I'm proud to be a Girl Scout?!

KJRH Faces Off

A cookie crunch off is more difficult than it looks ... as Phil and Beth soon found out! The rare sighting of producer Phil Price must have thrown reporter Beth Burnett off her game. While it appeared she had lead the girls to victory, Beth hadn't actually swallowed several cookies and even more had been flung to the floor. Phil was named the winner. Hopefully, more KJRH staff will have the opportunity to dethrone Phil in a studio Girl Scout Cookie crunch off soon!

Camp Tallchief enjoyed some special guests yesterday. Here Beth Burnett of Channel 2 interviews Mike Thornbrugh of Quick Trip. They had a corporate Day of Caring with a huge team of people who did AMAZING things for our properties. We roughly guessed it would have taken our property staff 3-4 months to accomplish the same amount of work! That is an amazing gift to a nonprofit. A HUGE thank you goes out to Quick Trip!

Girl Scout Good Times

My daughter and I are reminiscing over good times with Girl Scouts. One of the favorites? The "sister scout" weekend they spent at Camp Polly with their older sister troop. It was really a wonderful thing. The older girls could have run the camp themselves! We sat back and watched our daughters learn from older Girl Scouts and have the time of their lives.

Blazing Saddles

These girls showed their stuff last night! "Blazing Saddles" is our Level 3 horse program and the prerequisite for becoming a WIT (Wrangler In Training). Girls are not just sitting on horses and riding around, but they are learning about the total care of horses (including knowing things like the anatomy in case there is an injury and they need to call a vet and tell him what happened) and the industry as well. Of course, Girl Scouts are great campers, so this camp even includes an overnight trail ride! In the arena, they learn the basics of showmanship, and demonstrate what they have learned to their parents at the end of camp. I brought three Brownies with me who all want to start the horse program next summer. They are PUMPED!

OK, so my phone isn't always the best way to take photos! I'm attempting to blog on-the-spot during our first Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma staff meeting. Keith Huffman of Cox Communications spoke the staff about customer service. Of course, we have many "customers," but the primary customer is girls. I've said it before, and I'll say it again ... GREEN GIRLS ROCK!

Anyway, It is our first all staff meeting as GSEOK ... It is amazing to see all these faces of people dedicated to building girls of courage, confidence, and character. Hopefully as time goes on, I'll be able to share their stories and help others get to know these amazing women who have become professional Girl Scouts!

Nostalgia ... minus the helmet!

As a little girl, my dream was to have a horse. My parents helped me make that dream come true and learn some good life lessons in the process. Both my brother and I were given the opportunity to make one big purchase, but we would have to earn half of the money and our parents would give us the other half. I guess you could call it a "matching grant" of sorts! My brother chose a computer. Me? I chose a horse (ironic now because I'm the one who spends my life on computers). Those were some wonderful years, and I love knowing that my own daughter will be able to have similar experiences through Girl Scouts.

Our outreach team is so wonderful. From mounted police to rollerskating rinks, the girls are treated to a week of fun and friendship. But it doesn't stop there! These sparkling girls even had safety courses and are certified in CPR. Wow! You go, green girls!

Phoenix Rising

"Phoenix" is Mary Jessup's camp name. "Click Chick" is mine. Our Camp Director is more widely known as "Skipper" than by her given name. This is part of the culture at camp ... and it's fun. But don't let the fun fool you. There is serious business going on as well!

As Channel 6 featured today, Girl Scouts are serious about taking care of girls. Safety is paramount and we take great pride in knowing that our Camp Counselors are fully trained to handle emergencies. Today's feature? Weather. Are Girl Scouts prepared? You bet!

... for camp! I can't tell you how many times I have heard adults say that they had no idea what they were learning while they were growing up in Girl Scouting. But as real life challenges start to surface in adulthood, the skills they learned as young girls with their Girl Scout troop begin to surface. Teamwork. Cooperation. Determination. Problem solving. Self sufficiency. These young girls may think they are just carrying water. But step by step they are building their future.

A group of brave women joined me for the first class I have taught in years. They were WONDERFUL! We talked about creating Web sites, considering alternatives to traditional sites, safely sharing news online and being COPPA compliant. I demonstrated some of the easy (not to mention free!) options available with alternatives like blogs - and took a photo of them with my phone, emailed it from my phone to this blog, and showed them their photo online immediately. What fun!

Zandra and the United Way

Engaging, gregarious and full of life, Zandra charms everyone she speaks to during a video shoot for Tulsa Area United Way. She spoke about what being a Girl Scout means to her. Born with a rare medical condition, Zandra has to overcome many challenges that the rest of the world never things about. She was born without ribs. While you would think that would keep most people from enjoying life, Zandra has not let it slow her down one bit. In fact, she is one of our top cookie sellers! Zandra admits it is her favorite time of the year, and she thoroughly enjoys selling cookies. But above and beyond the thrill of the sale, she talks about how Girl Scouts is her chance to be around other girls and do all the exciting things Girl Scouts do. Her troop meets weekly (led by her physical therapist) and the three nurses that provide constant care also provide "taxi service" and make sure Zandra is part of everything the troop does.

Zandra's story is heartwarming and challenging, which warms my heart in and of itself. But something surprising melted my heart while we stood in Woodward Park waiting for the shoot to begin. She looked up at me, eyes sparkling, "How is your summer going?" She asked and she really wanted to know. Her pure curiosity broke through the world of busy schedules, no-time-for-others lifestyles, and other adult and work pressures. I stopped and realized that I couldn't recall anyone asking me that question, (and I don't know that I had asked anyone else, either). "Why thank you for asking," I said, "I don't know that anyone has asked me yet!" I can't remember what I mumbled initially, but I tried to tell her what I still feel at this moment ... "My summer is definitely brighter after meeting you!"

Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma!

Girl Scouts throughout eastern Oklahoma, ranging from Bartlesville to Broken Bow gathered in Muskogee to be part of history on Saturday afternoon as the newly formed Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma was officially unveiled. The new council was formed after three councils -- Bluestem, Tiak, and Magic Empire Council -- agreed to merge, providing greater cohesiveness for Girl Scouts throughout the eastern part of the state.

Nearly 1,000 girls and adults celebrated the union in Muskogee on Saturday. Following a celebratory gathering at Muskogee's Masonic Hall and a commemorative group photo, the group walked four blocks to the Three Rivers Museum for the unveiling of a bronze statue celebrating Muskogee as the city with the earliest recorded Girl Scout cookie sales. The Mistletoe Troop of Muskogee first used the sweet fundraising idea in 1917.

The bronze statue, commissioned by Girl Scouts of Magic Empire Council and Little Brownie Bakers, was created by Stillwater artist Phyllis Mantik and will be on permanent display at the Three Rivers Museum.

Every year, they honor graduates who have achieved success in their fields. This year, Sheila was one of the honorees, and I believe she had the loudest cheering section!

Celebrate the Magic

Our Adult Recognition Dinner was a well-attended and VERY special evening. From nostalgic photos through the years sprinkled through the decor to honors and recognitions that made one's heart melt, it was definitely an evening celebrating Magic Empire Council and the people who make it so special.

As we make the transition from Girl Scouts of Magic Empire Council into a larger council as Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma, our heritage will carry the magic into a new era. Two of my favorite moments from the evening are pictured. Above, our outgoing MECGS Board Chair (Sheila Hellen, left) and incoming GSEOK Board Chair (Joan Singleton, right) form part of a friendship circle (or shall I say sandwich?) with our continuing CEO, Karen Morgan. These three women have been pillars of the process and exemplified grace, strength and purpose.

Pictured below is Mary Lembcke, recipient of her 50 Year Membership Pin. As her granddaughter began to help her rise to come forward, the audience rose and gave Mary a standing ovation. Of course, tears fill my eyes. I love to see people honored by others - especially when it is for long-term dedication. 50 Years! It still makes me say, "WOW!" What made the night extra special is that her granddaughter received her 25 Year Pin - and was pinned with her mother's pin (who was not able to attend). Three generations of Girl Scouting! What was also amazing to me is that Mary has been a Girl Scout for almost as long as Magic Empire Council has been in existence!

Beth Burnett Shares Inspiration

Our Gold Award girls had a special treat ... Beth Burnett, a reporter with our local Channel 2 (KJRH). She shared her personal story and encouraged the girls to pursue their dreams. Overcoming obstacles was a way of life for Beth. She made it through some very difficult years in her youth and has become an award-winning reporter. I loved her response when she was invited to speak for Girl Scouts, "I would be glad to speak! That's why I do what I do. I want to be able to make a difference."

Stunned and Stunning

Magic Empire Council held both Gold and Silver Award Ceremonies. It was my first exposure to a taste of what these girls do. It isn't just a "simple project." The list of qualifications just to begin a project is impressive! A minimum number of hours is required when working on these projects, and it's probably more than most adults would ever realize. Not to mention that these aren't girls with extra time on their hands! They are high achievers.

I loved one moment I overheard while a Tulsa World reporter was interviewing one of our girls ... He asked what her grade point average was. "4.2," she replied. There was a moment of stunned silence. "On what scale?" When he found out she held a 4.2 on a scale of 4.0 (evidently advanced courses can earn a little extra!), he was truly stunned. And I loved it. Of course, I believe our girls are simply stunning as it is! But it sure is wonderful to witness a moment where someone else is truly surprised and impressed.

Dominique Dawes Shares a Laugh with Staff

It was our honor not only to have Dominique Dawes, three time Olympian, present for our Juliette Low Leadership Society Luncheon, but it was our pleasure to give her the ride of her life as well! While she claims the driving of our dear staffer Joann didn't scare her one bit, the stories were already flying ... and so was she with Joann behind the wheel!

The pleasure of having Dominique Dawes was all ours. She spoke to our Juliette Low Leadership Society Luncheon about E-N-V-I-S-I-O-N, her keys to success. If I hadn't been behind a camera, I would have been taking notes so I could have blogged what each one stood for! Maybe my Girl Scout sisters can help me out with the acronym.

My favorite reference, however, was to her "D-3" inspiration, which she first squirted on her mirror with her father's shaving cream: Determination, Dedication, Desire. It reminded me a little of my "IngShui" elements which are a visual reminder of my desires and goals. I think it is SO important to find ways that are personally meaningful to envision goals!

Two Women Who Made History

Today we had the great privilege of having Olympic Gold Medalist, Dominique Dawes, as our guest at the Juliette Low Leadership Society Luncheon. She had the pleasure of being introduced to our own Girl Scout "Hall of Famer" Ann Graves, the woman behind JLLS. If I have my details straight, they both have a common connection ... the National Board of GSUSA. Ann Graves has served (and I believe is on the nominating committee currently) and Dominique is hoping to serve. What a beautiful connection!

All Smiles For The Tulsa World Camera

Our Juliette Low Leadership Society held a fabulous tea in the home of Sally Hughes (seated at left). Among the notable guests is the legendary Ann Graves (pictured right), who started the society years ago. Seated between these two amazing women, our own Girl Scout, Julia, shared the afternoon with the expansive group of ladies and imparted an eloquent speech on what Girl Scouting means to her.

As always, our Girl Scouts make me so proud! We truly do have the most remarkable young women around.

And a side note ... while I have a plethora of beautiful photos of the event, this one tickles me because of Paula's reflection in the mirror. She is truly the event diva for all things Juliette Low!

Standing Ovations All Around ...

Little miss Abigayle spoke to an important crowd at the Annual Meeting for Girl Scouts of Magic Empire Council and received a standing ovation. She shared a bit about her Bronze Award, which brought her on an unexpected path that went beyond a good deed. Inspired by her cousin who is faced with immune deficiency challenges, she attempted to get 100 new plasma donors. She didn't meet her goal ... she was on her way to 300! The company that she worked with recognized her with a plaque and when the national organization found out what she had done, they flew her and her cousin to Florida to speak at their meeting as well.

Aren't our Girl Scouts amazing? This little 10 year old is already making an impact on her community and the lives within it. I'm so proud to be a Girl Scout!

Speaking of proud to be Girl Scouts ... we are all proud to become Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma! The vote to accept the plan and agreement of merger passed unanimously.

It's after 5:00 ... sometimes it's the time when I can settle in and finally get some work done! Tonight as I walked back into the east wing of the Girl Scout office, I am dreaming of my Lemon Chalet Cremes and have decided they are just the thing I need to keep the thinking juices going for a little longer.

I walk by Pam's office and laugh to myself as I see her Lemon Chalet Cremes open on her desk. I walk by another office with an open box of cookies ... then another ... and another! While we get media attention from many stations, I just had to post this because I'm so proud! My daughter had to come with me to two morning shows, and wore her uniform because she hoped she could sit on the set (I told her only the older girls were being interviewed). Well, at Channel 8, they asked if she could be part of it and weren't supposed to give her a microphone, but did anyway! When asked on camera what she liked about selling Girl Scout Cookies, I held my breath. You never know what the young ones will say. "I like meeting new people," she said. What an awesome answer! I was so proud!

I have to say, this was a GREAT interview. The value of leadership and the learning involved in the Cookie Sale was highlighted, and that made us all quite happy!
